Hypnotherapy for Trauma-Related Difficulties

Past experiences can continue to affect how you feel. I will always assess whether hypnotherapy is suitable, and some people are better supported by specialist trauma therapy first, or at the very least should consider a referral to a local mental health team for an assessment of mental health needs. We would go at a pace that is safe for you.

Hypnotherapy may help with this, but I do not claim it cures medical conditions. We will always talk through whether it is a suitable approach for you.

When the past stays with you

Difficult or frightening experiences can continue to affect how you feel long after they are over. This may show up as anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, feeling on edge, or avoiding reminders. Everyone responds differently, and there is no right or wrong way to cope.

Safety comes first

Work around trauma needs particular care. I always assess whether hypnotherapy is suitable. If it is not, I will tell you honestly and suggest you discuss this with your GP and consider a referral to a mental health team. We would always go at a pace that is safe for you.

How hypnotherapy may help

Where it is suitable, hypnotherapy may help you relax, feel calmer and more in control, and develop practical ways of coping with the effects of past experiences. You do not have to go into detail about what happened. You stay awake, aware and in control throughout, and can stop at any time.

My background

I am a registered mental health nurse with over 30 years’ NHS experience, including crisis teams, community psychiatric teams and psychiatric liaison services. At your consultation we talk through what brings you to therapy, and you can ask me anything about how I work before deciding whether to go ahead.

If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, please call 999 or Samaritans free on 116 123 at any time.

Common questions

Do I have to tell you what happened?

No. You decide what you share, and you do not have to go into detail to benefit from support.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone with trauma?

No. Screening is part of the process. If hypnotherapy is not suitable, I will suggest you discuss this with your GP and consider a referral to a mental health team.
